Online German Language Courses

Why Study German?

German is spoken by over 100 million people worldwide. It was the language of the first printed book as well as the language of such famous people as Mozart, Beethoven, Freud, and Einstein. A recent language study published by The Economist shows that speaking German can result in higher lifetime earning due to a shorter supply of proficient German speakers.

Full Suite of Online German Language Courses

Fuel Education offers online German courses for elementary through high school students with flexible delivery options. They can be implemented as fully online courses, in a blended learning environment, or as supplemental curriculum. Our German course offerings provide varying levels of immersion methodology to accommodate different world language objectives and learning styles.

Focus of Study

Through our online German courses, students focus on the four key areas of world language study: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The extensive use of authentic video, audio, images, and texts allows for a contextualized and interactive experience with the vocabulary and linguistic structures. Cultural information relevant to German-speaking countries and communities and robust cross-cultural reflections are infused throughout the materials from beginning to end.

Our German Course Offerings

Elementary German 1 (Grades 3–5) (Middlebury Interactive)

This introductory German course provides an interactive experience for a student’s first exposure to the German language. The content for each unit is based on an authentic story, myth, or legend from various German-speaking cultures. Although the course focuses on vocabulary acquisition, basic grammar principles are intuitively grasped through stories, games, activities, songs, and assessments. Through the course, students learn simple German phrases; begin to read, write, speak, and listen for meaning in German; and recognize distinctive practices and customs of German-speaking cultures.

Prerequisites: None

Elementary German 2 (Grades 3–5)

This second level of the introductory German course continues the exploration of the language through a fun and interactive experience designed for younger learners. The content for each week is based on an immersive adventure story which runs throughout the course. Weekly episodes begin in English and weave in more German every day. Although the course focuses principally on vocabulary acquisition, basic grammar principles are intuitively grasped through stories, games, activities, and assessments. Culture lessons are presented through multi-media CultureGrams™—lessons covering cultural aspects of major German-speaking areas. Students will become familiar with the sounds and rhythms of German; expand their listening and reading comprehension with more than 600 vocabulary words; and expand their ability to read, write, speak, and listen for meaning in German.

Prerequisites: Elementary German 1 or equivalent

Middle School German 1 (Middlebury Interactive)

This fun, interactive course for middle school students is filled with diverse, multimedia language activities. The instruction is equivalent to that found in the first semester of high school

German I. Students begin their introduction to German by focusing on the four key areas of world language study: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The course represents an ideal blend of language learning pedagogy and online learning. Each unit consists of a new vocabulary theme and grammar concept, reading and listening comprehension activities, speaking and writing activities, multimedia cultural presentations, and interactive activities and practices which reinforce vocabulary and grammar.

There is a strong emphasis on providing context and conversational examples for the language concepts presented in each unit. Students should expect to be actively engaged in their own language learning; become familiar with common vocabulary terms and phrases; comprehend a wide range of grammar patterns; participate in simple conversations and respond appropriately to basic conversational prompts; analyze and compare cultural practices, products, and perspectives of various German-speaking countries; and take frequent assessments where their language progression can be monitored.
